About Me
From 330 lbs to fitness tech nerd
I'm a hobby coder and fitness enthusiast. In 2021, at 53 years old and 330 lbs, I finally made the commitment to get serious about my health. Over the next 13 months I dropped my weight to 193 lbs using a mix of diet, aggressive exercise, and GLP-1 medications for weight loss and type-2 diabetes control.
These days I hover around 200 lbs, train 5–6 days a week, track what I eat, and do my best to maintain a healthy lifestyle without losing my sense of humor along the way.
How a grumpy Garmin user became a developer
This site — and most of the apps on it — were born from one simple frustration: I wanted better fitness data than my gear was giving me.
I started out by dusting off an old Fitbit Charge 3 just to count steps. That worked… until I upgraded to a Garmin Descent Mk2i (I’m an avid scuba diver when I’m not swearing at Bluetooth packets). Around the same time, I picked up a couple of affordable home fitness machines — a rowing machine and an elliptical, both from Merach — and used them to more than double my weekly cardio minutes and move from casual walking into real training.
That’s when the annoyance really kicked in: my shiny Garmin — and honestly, almost every other fitness tracker on the market — couldn’t talk directly to my Bluetooth-capable smart trainers. I didn’t feel great about spending thousands on commercial ANT+ machines just to make the data pretty, so I treated it as a challenge instead.
Building my own missing pieces
Hundreds of hours later, after diving deep into Garmin Connect IQ development and the joys (and pains) of Bluetooth FTMS protocols, my FTMS data field apps came to life. They bridge the gap between consumer-grade smart trainers and devices that were never really designed to speak to them.
From there, things snowballed. I started porting ideas over to Android — phone, tablet, and Wear OS — creating apps like FTMS Workout and FitBridge to connect more dots in the fitness ecosystem. A few of my other projects exist simply because they sounded fun to build and made me smile when they finally worked.
Absolute Bollocks Creations is the home for all of that: small, opinionated apps built by one person who cares way too much about clean data, clever hacks, and making fitness tech behave a little better than it does out of the box.
